Chapter Eleven
KEIRON WOKE TO the sound of hammering on the back door. He jerked upright, shocked out of deep sleep. Draven stirred and moaned, and Keiron took time to soothe him back to sleep before he got out of bed, realised he was still dressed, and hurried down to the kitchen.
Fenn wasnât happy. âIâve been standing here for many minutes.â
âIâm sorry; I was asleep.â
âYou were supposed to be taking care of Draven,â she scolded.
âWell, fairies may be able to stay awake for forty-eight hours straight, but I can assure you humans canât. I did my best, butââ
Fenn waved off his explanation and hurried up the stairs in front of him.
âPlease come in,â he grumbled, following in her wake. âMake yourself at home.â
Fenn went straight to the bedroom and sat on the bed.
Draven stirred and opened his eyes. When he saw Fenn, he threw himself into her arms and hugged her tightly. âFenn. Iâve missed you so much. Thank you for saving me. Thank you. Thank you.â
Keiron almost fainted on the spot. He was still deathly pale and sounded weak, but he was so much better. Relief stole the strength from Keironâs legs and he had to sit down or fall down. Sitting in the chair and watching Fenn and Draven hug, Keiron felt strange. Not so much unwanted as unneeded. They were speaking togetherâover each other, under each other, around each other, but somehow understanding and responding to each other.
Maybeâ¦. Maybe Draven shouldnât be with him. Heâd never fit in with this life, this world. Heâd get hurt again. It was inevitable. He should go back with Fenn. It would kill Keiron to say it, but he was going to have to. It was best for Draven, and what was best for Draven was best for himâeven though it would tear out his heart to see him go.
âKeiron,â Dravenâs voice drew him out of his gloomy contemplation. He smiled to see Draven sitting up, propped against the pillows, holding out his arms. Wearily, he got to his feet, and willingly, he went to them.
It was more than good to feel Dravenâs arms around him, more than great. It was heavenly. âThank you, Keiron,â Draven whispered, nestling his head on Keironâs shoulder. "Thank you so much. You saved me. You found Fenn and brought her to me, and you saved me.â Draven beamed, and the ice that had formed around Keironâs heart thawed a little.
âI didnât do anything, Draven. Fenn saved you. Without her, Iâd have sat here and watched you die.â
âBut you did, Keiron; you did do something. You could have sat here and done nothing, but you didnât. You went searching for help, and you found it. You found Fenn. Without you, she wouldnât have known. Without you, she wouldnât have come.â
âTrue, I suppose, butââ
âSsh.â Draven lifted his head and smiled. âIt doesnât matter. All that matters is that itâs over.â
âYes. Over now. Everythingâsââ
âI think,â Fenn said coolly, âthat if youâve finished, you might want to think about getting Draven something to eat.
